Amazon opens a store, Amazon US site FBA has different product packaging requirements

Opening an Amazon store? You need to understand the latest packaging requirements for Amazon FBA warehousing, the packaging box requirements for Amazon FBA, the packaging requirements for Amazon FBA warehousing in the United States, and the packaging label requirements for Amazon FBA.

Amazon is one of the world's largest e-commerce markets. According to Statista's data, Amazon's total comprehensive net sales revenue in 2022 was $514 billion, with North America being the largest business unit, with annual net sales approaching $316 billion.

Opening a store on Amazon requires understanding Amazon logistics services. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a service that allows you to outsource order delivery to Amazon. Register for Amazon Logistics, ship products to Amazon's global operations center, and provide free overnight delivery services to buyers through Prime. After the buyer purchases the product, Amazon logistics specialists will be responsible for sorting, packaging, and delivering the order.

Following Amazon FBA product packaging and labeling requirements can reduce damage to the product, help make transportation costs more predictable, and ensure the best buyer experience.

1.Packaging requirements for Amazon FBA liquid, cream, gel and cream products

Proper packaging of goods that are or contain liquids, creams, gel, and cream helps ensure that they are not damaged or leaked during distribution.

Liquids may damage other products during delivery or storage. Firmly package liquids (including sticky goods such as cream, gel and cream) to protect buyers, Amazon employees and other goods.

Basic drop test requirements for Amazon FBA liquid products

All liquids, creams, gel, and cream must be able to withstand a 3-inch drop test without leakage or spillage of the contents of the container. The drop test includes five 3-foot hard surface drop tests:

-Bottom flat fall

-Top flat fall

-Long edge flat fall

-Shortest edge flat fall

-Corner drop

Goods belonging to regulated dangerous goods

Dangerous goods refer to substances or materials that pose risks to health, safety, property, or the environment during storage, processing, or transportation due to their inherent flammable, sealed, pressurized, corrosive, or any other harmful substances.

If your goods are liquids, creams, gel or cream and are controlled dangerous goods (such as perfume, specific bathroom cleaners, detergents and permanent inks), they need to be packaged.

Container type, container size, packaging requirements

Non fragile products, not limited to polyethylene plastic bags

Fragile 4.2 ounces or more polyethylene plastic bags, bubble wrap packaging, and packaging boxes

Fragile less than 4.2 ounces in polyethylene plastic bags or bubble wrap packaging

Attention: All liquid goods belonging to regulated hazardous materials must be packaged in polyethylene plastic bags to prevent leakage or overflow during transportation, regardless of whether the goods are sealed or not.

Goods not classified as regulated dangerous goods

For liquids, creams, gel and cream that are not controlled dangerous goods, the following packaging treatment is required.

container type Container size Pre processing requirements Exceptions
Non fragileitems no limit Polyethylene plastic bags If the liquid is double sealed and passes the drop test, it does not need to be bagged. (Please refer to the table below for an example of double sealing.)
fragile 4.2 ounces or more Bubble film packaging
fragile Less than 4.2 ounces No preprocessing required

Other packaging and labeling requirements for Amazon FBA liquid products

If your product is sold in bundled sets or has a validity period, in addition to the above requirements, please be sure to follow the packaging requirements listed below.

-Sales in sets: Regardless of the type of container, the goods sold in sets must be packaged together to prevent separation. In addition, if you are selling bundled sets (such as a set of 3 bottles of the same shampoo), you must provide a unique ASIN for the set that is different from the ASIN for a single bottle. For bundled packages, the barcode of individual items must not face outward, which helps ensure that Amazon warehouse employees scan the barcode of the package instead of scanning the barcode of internal individual items. Multiple bundled products must meet the following conditions:

-When applying pressure to either side, the packaging should not collapse.

-The product is securely located inside the packaging.

-Seal the packaging with tape, glue, or staples.

-Shelf life: Products with a shelf life must have a label with a shelf life of 36 or larger font on the outside of the packaging.

All products containing spherical particles, powders, or other particulate matter must be able to withstand a 3 foot (91.4 cm) drop test, and the contents of the container must not leak or spill.

-Products that cannot pass the drop test must be packaged in polyethylene plastic bags.

The drop test includes a test of 5 drops from a height of 3 feet (91.4 centimeters) onto a hard surface, and must not show any damage or leakage before passing the test:

-Bottom flat fall

-Top flat fall

-Longest surface flat falling

-Shortest edge flat fall

-Corner drop

Not allowed: The outer cover of powdered goods is not secure and may open, causing the contents to spill out.Allow: Powder products to be packaged in sealed bags with suffocation warning labels.

Amazon FBA Fragile and Glass Packaging Guidelines

Suggestion.. Not recommended...

-Bottom flat fall

-Top flat fall

-Long edge flat fall

-Short edge flat fall

-Corner drop

Leave gaps in the packaging, which may reduce the chance of the product passing the 3-foot drop test.

Amazon FBA Jewelry Packaging Jewelry Bag Packaging Requirements

-The jewelry bag must be separately packaged in a plastic bag, and the barcode should be placed on the outer side of the jewelry bag to prevent damage from dust. Stick a product description label on the side with the largest surface area.

-The size of the bag should be suitable for the size of the jewelry bag. Do not force the jewelry bag into a too small bag, or pack it in a too large bag so that the jewelry bag can move around. The edges of large bags are more easily grabbed and torn, causing internal items to be exposed to dust or dirt.

-Plastic bags with openings of 5 inches or more (at least 1.5 mils) must have a 'suffocation warning'. Example: "Plastic bags can pose a danger. To avoid suffocation hazards, keep packaging materials away from infants and children

-All plastic bags must be transparent.

This example shows that the imitation fabric box is properly stored in a bag slightly larger than the box. This is a proper packaging method.

This example shows that the box is stored in a much larger bag than the product and the label is not on the box. This bag is more likely to be punctured or torn, and the barcode is separated from the item. This is an inappropriate packaging method.

This example shows that an unfixed sleeve lacks protection for the box, causing it to slide out and separate from the sleeve and barcode. This is an inappropriate packaging method.

Amazon FBA Jewelry Packaging Box Jewelry

-Boxes made of fabric like materials that are susceptible to dust or tearing must be individually bagged or boxed, and barcodes must be prominently displayed.

-The protective sleeve or bag should only be slightly larger than the product.

-The box sleeve should be sufficiently snug or fixed to prevent slipping, and the barcode must be visible after the sleeve is inserted.

-If possible, the barcode should be attached to the box; If firmly fixed, it can also be attached to the sleeve.

9.Amazon FBA Small Product Packaging Requirements

Any product with a maximum side width of less than 2-1/8 inches (the width of the credit card) must be packaged in a polyethylene plastic bag, and a barcode must be attached to the outer side of the plastic bag to avoid misplacement or loss of the product. This can also protect the product from tearing during delivery or damage caused by contact with dirt, dust, or liquids. Some products may not have enough size to accommodate labels, and packaging the products in bags can ensure full scanning of the barcode without folding the edges of the products.

Amazon FBA Small Product Packaging Guide
