Export inspection of humidifiers requires relevant inspection and testing in accordance with the international standard IEC 60335-2-98. In December 2023, the International Electrotechnical Commission published the 3rd edition of IEC 60335-2-98, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances Part 2: Special requirements for humidifiers.
The newly released third edition of IEC 60335-2-98:2023 should be used in conjunction with the sixth edition of IEC 60335-1:2020.
Changes to humidifier inspection standards are as follows:
1.It is clarified that DC power supply appliances and battery-operated appliances are within the scope of application of this standard.
2.Updated normative reference documents and related texts.
3. The following requirements are added to the instructions:
For humidifiers shaped or decorated like toys, the instructions should include:
This is not a toy. This is an electrical appliance and must be operated and maintained by an adult. In addition to the water to be vaporised, only any additional liquids advised by the manufacturer for cleaning or fragrance shall be used.
For fixed appliances intended to be installed above 850 mm above the ground in normal use, the instructions should contain:
Mount this product more than 850 mm from the floor.
4.Introduced the application of test probes Probe 18 and Probe 19 in protection against electric shock and protection of moving parts.
5.Added test methods and temperature rise limit requirements for external accessible surfaces of appliances.
6.For humidifiers that are shaped or decorated like toys, add drop test requirements for functional parts.
7.Added requirements for the size and specifications of drainage holes set up to comply with standard requirements. If they do not meet the requirements, they will be considered blocked.
8.Clarified requirements for remote operation of humidifiers.
9.Humidifiers that meet the relevant requirements of the standard can be shaped or decorated like toys (see CL22.44, CL22.105).
10. For humidifiers that are shaped or decorated like toys, make sure that their button batteries or R1-type batteries cannot be touched without tools.
Notes on humidifier inspection and testing:
The standard update introduces the application of test probes Probe 18 and Probe 19 in anti-shock protection and moving parts protection as mentioned in point 4 above. Test probe 18 simulates children aged 36 months to 14 years old, and test probe 19 is Simulates children under 36 months old. This will directly affect the design and production of product structure. Manufacturers should consider the contents of this standard update as early as possible during the product design and development stage and prepare in advance to respond to market requirements.
