On March 26, local time, the US President signed an executive order at the White House, and the relevant measures will take effect on April 2.
Trump said that the auto tariffs will be permanent. He said that if the car is made in the United States, there is no need to pay tariffs.
Trump said that Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has not made any suggestions on auto tariffs, nor has he asked for any benefits from it.
Trump also said that the United States will impose tariffs on wood and drugs.
On the same day, White House spokesman Harrison Fields said that the 25% tariff measure will apply to imported passenger cars and light trucks, as well as key auto parts (engines, transmissions, powertrain parts and electrical components), and tariffs on other parts may be increased if necessary.
Fields said that auto parts that meet the “United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement” (“USMCA”) will continue to be exempt from tariffs until the Secretary of Commerce negotiates with the Customs and Border Protection Agency.
On the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Carney said Canada will soon respond to the new US auto tariffs and may impose retaliatory tariffs. Carney said he was sure he would speak to Trump soon.
Carney said Trump’s announcement of auto tariffs was a direct attack on Canadian workers.
