Down testing items include:
Down content (down content), filling amount, fluffiness, cleanliness, oxygen consumption, residual fat rate, down type, microorganisms, APEO, etc.
Standards include GB/T 14272-2011 down clothing, GB/T 14272-2021 down clothing, QB/T 1193-2012 down quilts, etc.
1) Down content (down content): The minimum lower limit of the national standard is that the down content of down jackets shall not be less than 50%, including the content of duck down in goose down. Down jackets below this number cannot be called down jackets.
2.) Fluffiness: The fluffiness test varies according to different down contents. When the duck down content is 90%, the fluffiness reaches 14 centimeters to be qualified.
3.) Cleanliness: Only those with a cleanliness of 350mm or more can be recognized as qualified down jackets. Otherwise, they cannot meet the specified standards and are prone to various bacteria.
4.) Oxygen consumption index: Down jackets with an oxygen consumption index of less than or equal to ten are considered unqualified.
5.) Odor level: Three of the five inspectors assessed that there was an odor, which means that the down jackets were not properly washed during the production process.
The testing standards for down jackets are as follows: CCGF 102.9-2015 Down jackets
DIN EN 13542-2002 Down jackets. Determination of the compressibility index of garments
DIN EN 13543-2002 Down jackets. Determination of water absorption of filling materials
FZ/T 73045-2013 Knitted children’s clothing
FZ/T 73053-2015 Knitted down jackets
GB/T 14272-2011 Down jackets
GB 50705-2012 Garment factory design specifications
QB/T 1735-1993 Down jackets
SB/T 10586-2011 Technical requirements for acceptance of down jackets
SN/T 1932.10-2010 Inspection procedures for import and export clothing Part 10: Cold-proof clothing
Important indicators for measuring down:
(1) Filling volume: Filling volume is not an indicator for measuring the quality of down. It refers to the weight of all the down in a down jacket. The filling volume of a general outdoor down jacket is about 250-450 grams depending on the target design.
(2) Down content: Down content is the proportion of down in the down, generally expressed as a percentage. The down content of outdoor down jackets is generally above 80%, which means that the down content is 80% and the down content is 20%.
(3) Fill power: Fill power is an important indicator for measuring the warmth of down. It refers to the volume occupied by one ounce (30 grams) of down in cubic inches under certain conditions. If one ounce of down occupies 600 cubic inches, the down is said to have a fill power of 600. The higher the fluffiness of the down, the greater the volume of air that can be fixed to keep warm and insulate with the same filling volume, so the warmth retention of the down is better. Fluffiness is not a hard indicator in China, and the relative error of measurement is also large.
Basic requirements for down jacket fabrics:
(1) Windproof and breathable: Most outdoor down jackets have a certain degree of windproofness. Breathability is a uniform requirement for outdoor clothing, but many hikers tend to ignore the importance of breathability of down jacket fabrics. The consequences of an airtight down jacket on the mountains are often fatal.
(2) Down-proof: There are three ways to enhance the down-proof property of down fabrics. One is to coat or apply a film on the base fabric to prevent down leakage. Of course, the first premise is that it is breathable and will not affect the lightness and softness of the fabric. The second is to improve the down-proof performance of the fabric itself through post-processing of high-density fabrics. The third is to add a layer of down-proof cloth to the inner layer of the down fabric. The quality of the down-proof cloth will directly affect the quality of the whole garment.
(3) Light, thin and soft: In today’s world of lightweight equipment, the thinness of the fabric of a down jacket will directly affect the overall weight of a down jacket, and soft fabrics will enhance the comfort of wearing a down jacket that is already bulky. On the other hand, light, thin and soft fabrics help to better utilize the fluffiness of the down, so the warmth retention will also be higher.
(4) Waterproof: Mainly for professional down jackets, which are worn directly as outerwear in extremely cold environments. The fabric of the down jacket should be used directly instead of a jacket.
